Frieder Scheuermann (RWTH Aachen) wins Euregional Prize for Architecture
Cross-border architecture prize for the best graduation projects of the five architecture colleges in Aachen, Liège , Hasselt and Maestricht.
On Saturday 5 November, the 21st edition of the Euregional Prize for Architecture took place at the University of Liège. For this prize - annually organised by SCHUNCK* together with one of the colleges - graduation projects from the five architecture colleges in Hasselt, Liège, Maestricht and Aachen were put forward.
From approximately 400 graduate students in the college year 2010-2011, thirty projects were selected for participation in the Euregional Prize for Architecture.
These 30 best projects can be visited, free of charge, at the University of Liège, upto and including Friday 2 December (except on Friday 11 November). Location: Place du 20 Août 7, Liège. The prizewinning projects are clearly indicated to the benefit of the public.
The international jury, consisting of Almut Ernst, Joost Hovenier (chairman), Li Mei Tsien, Liesbeth Vander Waeren and Peggy Winkels, decided after careful consideration, to attribute the prizes as follows:
First prize (2.500 Euros):
The first prize goes to Frieder Scheuermann (RWTH Aachen) for his project “Flussbad und Bootshaus an der Adler, Königgrätz (Tschechien)”
"There was no doubt in the mind of the jury that this project stands out as the most coherent one. The jury highly appreciated the commitment, preciseness and poetic approach of the project. This project shows maturity at every level, from its conception till its presentation. The precision of the drawing matches the precision of the design. It embraces the simple moments of life."
Second prize (1.250 Euros):
The second prize is for Florence Modave (Université de Liège) for her project “Outremeuse's door”
"This project deals with an actual problem, taking a historical building into the 21st century. Despite a certain weakness in the presentation, the jury appreciated the elegance and the simplicity of the added volume. It creates an interesting new space which reactivates the old building. The connection between the old and the new is well mastered."
Third prize (500 Euros):
The third prize was won by Andrea Carmen Kuhn (RWTH Aachen) with the project “A psychiatry beyond the horizon”
"The project is clear and powerful and at the same time romantic. The jury found the non-compromising position of the project fascinating. However this extreme position led to a lot of discussion and polarised the jury. Some members found the ideology dangerous whereas others found it intriguing in its maximisation of the chosen idea. The presentation was found brilliant and in total coherence with the project."
Honourable mentions were attributed to the following three graduates:
Digna Hansen (PHL Hasselt) for the project “Care Farm - Aldeneik”
Juliane Greb (RWTH Aachen) for the project “Psychiatric Hospital Laboe”
Matthias Hoffmann (RWTH Aachen) for the project “Locus Ludens”
The EAP exhibition with the 30 participating projects can be visited, free of charge, upto and including Friday 2 December 2011 (except on Friday 11 November) at the University of Liège, Place du 20 Août 7. Tuesday through Saturday 10 — 17 hrs.
